Every time I hear the words Fidget Spinners! My head says it three times in quick rapid succession like they did in the Michael Keaton film. "Fidget Spinner, Fidget Spinner, Fidget Spinner!" The excitement of the words seems to fit well with the frenetic pace of the toy. Our boys are too young for toys like these, but I know the day will come when they want the trendy toy that everyone else has. Though, when I look back and remember the toys I wanted when I was young and what's available now, I shudder to think what they'll dream up between now and then.
When researching Fidget Spinners, Fidget Spinners, Fidget Spinners (sorry, had to) for this blog post I discovered that it's origins were designed for quite the opposite reaction. They were intended to induce calm for those with anxiety, ADHD and related conditions. Keep the fidgety-ness occupied so that everything else quietens down. And as often happens these things take on a life of their own when they become a fad and their original purpose got lost along the way. These toys fulfill their intended design for some with those conditions, but some educators now find they've taken over they can now be a distraction in classes as the kids are focused on them rather than the lessons.
What toys trended when you were kids? Did you parents get them for you? Does your kid have a fidget spinner now? I'm curious to hear peoples thoughts on them and what effect (positive and negative) on their children. Let me know your experiences! Comment below!
